Glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull glacier is a great way to learn about Iceland's ice caps.
Your bus will easily take you to the South Coast destinations, such as Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

Climb upon Sólheimajokull glacier and witness the amazing South Coast of Iceland on this immersive glacier hiking tour. This excursion should not be missed by those seeking adventure, at any time of the year.

You will be picked up from Reykjavík for this tour in the morning, and be driven along the ring road south, towards your glacier. You will make several stops on the route, firstly to buy any refreshments, and secondly to take in some amazing sites.

The first of these is Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall many know of because of the cave behind it; this depression in the 60-metre tall cliff it falls from means that the cascade can be fully encircled in summer. While the path is closed for safety in winter, seeing this beautiful falls tumble into a field of snow is mesmerising.

The second major site you will stop at is Skógafoss waterfall. While no taller than Seljalandsfoss, it seems to be even greater due to its width and power. Even in winter when the flow is at its lowest (as both of these waterfalls are fed by glacial meltwater), it is still mightily impressive.

Finally, you will reach Sólheimajökull glacier tongue. This outlet comes from the fourth largest ice cap in the country, Mýrdalsjökull, which covers the explosive volcano Katla. In clear weather, you will be able to see a neighbouring subglacial volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010.

Your guide will get you and your group ready, into your crampons and helmets, review with you the safety of glacier hiking, then begin the ascent. Following them slowly and carefully, you will be able to marvel at the views of the South Coast, as well as the vividly coloured ice with its crevasses, caves and ridges.

You will learn all about the glaciers as you travel, and will have plenty of opportunities for photographs. If there are any particularly unusual features present on the ice cap, your guide will be sure to lead you there.

After an exciting exploration, your guide will return you to your vehicle, and you’ll set off back to Reykjavík.

Do not miss this opportunity for sightseeing and glacier hiking. Check availability by choosing a date.
