Leidarendi Lava Cave Exploration

Smooth and bizarre lava formations can be found inside Leiðarendi cave.
Stalactites in Leiðarendi Lava Tube.
Some parts of Leiðarendi are quite cavernous, and some very narrow.
Leiðarendi is a perfect cave for ghost stories in the dark, as it holds a dark secret.
To get in and out of Leiðarendi cave requires you to climb a rockfall.
Helmets with torches attached will allow you to safely and easily traverse Leiðarendi cave.

Step inside a naturally formed lava tunnel on this caving adventure from Reykjavík City. If you want to have the perfect Icelandic experience without devoting your entire day or venturing far from the capital, this tour is for you.

Your friendly local guide will pick you up in Reykjavík in the morning and take you to the lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Along the way, you’ll be treated to a stop in the centre of port town Hafnarfjörður, where old houses are built amongst lava said to be inhabited by elves.

You will also briefly visit the harbour to learn about the history of fishing and enjoy the tranquil scenery. As you leave Hafnarfjörður behind, you’ll make your way to your destination of Leiðarendi cave.

This 2,000-year-old lava tube is located at the intersection of two lava fields and reaches lengths of 900 metres (3,000 feet) without any man-made walkways at all. Before you can enter this natural marvel, your guide will provide you with helmets and headlights to prepare you for your journey into the subterranean.

Once inside, you’ll be safely led through the cave’s twisting tunnels as you admire the colourful rock formations, smooth lava walls, unique stalagmites and magical stalactites. During the winter months, you can also expect to see gorgeous natural ice sculptures.

As you emerge back to the surface, with big smiles and dirty knees, your guide will whisk you off back to Reykjavík City where you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

Don’t miss out on this essential Icelandic caving experience during a short but rewarding tour from Reykjavík and back. Check availability by choosing a date.
