Langjokull Ice Cave Tunnel & The Whale Fjord

Join this tour for a memorable trip to a sprawling farm estate in Húsafell, followed by an afternoon exploring inside Langjökull glacier, roaming the chilly blue-white halls of a man-made ice tunnel.

You'll be picked up at your accommodation in Reykjavik and whirled away to Husafell, just on the edge of the highlands. From here, you'll hop on a specially equipped glacier vehicle to plough your way through the countryside to Langjökull glacier, the second largest glacier in Iceland. Throughout your journey, you will be surrounded by a stark landscape of mountains and icy plains.

Inside the glacier, your knowledgeable guide will explain the effects of global warming on the glaciers and the ecology in Iceland; the problem is so serious that in as little as 80 years, the glacier may have melted away. To combat the effects of greenhouse gases, volunteers plant many trees around Langjökull each year.

Next, you'll go to Deildartunguhver, the highest flowing hot spring in Europe and a pleasant spot of green vegetation and bubbling spring water. Be careful not to get too close - the water is consistently 97 degrees C (206 degrees F). Near the pool, you can also find a plant called the deer fern, Blechnum spicant, which grows nowhere else in Iceland.

You'll also see the exceptional Hraunfossar waterfall, where water cascades then trickles over the lava fields, pouring down into the Hvitá river. This is a fantastic spot for photography enthusiasts.

On the way back to the capital, you'll see the old whale processing plant at Hvalfjörður, an area once famous for its fishing and whaling industry. You'll also see the remaining buildings from a British/American base constructed during WWII, originally intended for submarine convoys to gather before heading to Europe.

Seize your chance to enjoy the beauty and history of the highlands, including an incredible up-close exploration of the glacier. Check the booking availability by choosing a date.

(Jeans are not recommended because denim, once wet, will spread moisture and take a long time to dry, leaving the wearer extremely cold!)
