Get the ultimate icy experience with this Ice Cave and Northern lights tour. Travel the South Coast all the way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where you’ll be taken up Vatnajökull glacier to an authentic ice cave, then spend the evening hunting for the Northern Lights.

After being picked up in the morning, you will board a large but comfortable jeep or a minibus and head to Iceland's South Coast. You’ll travel past white glaciers and black sand deserts on your way to the first stop, Jökulslárlón glacier lagoon.

Giant icebergs that have broken off a nearby glacier float serenely on the freezing water before drifting off to sea. Make sure you keep an eye out for seals, as they can sometimes be spotted swimming in the lagoon or lounging on the bergs.

Close by is a black sand beach where smaller icebergs have washed up on shore. As they glisten in the sunlight, they are reminiscent of gemstones on black satin. The scene has thus earned the beach the nickname, The Diamond Beach.

After marvelling at this spectacular sight, you’ll be driven through the rugged glacier terrain to the Ice Cave. There, a local guide will provide you will all safety gear, such as crampons, helmet and lights, before you enter the ice cave itself.

After enjoying the dazzling blue ice cave, you’ll board the bus again and head back to the city. Before reaching Reykjavík, you will, however, make the last scheduled stop at the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. During the winter months, the cascade is lit with strong floodlights which give it a mystical aura and provides excellent photo opportunities.

As you are travelling in the winter, there is always a chance the elusive Northern Lights will make an appearance. If the dancing Aurora’s haven’t shown up during the tour, and if conditions are right, you will take a little detour on the way back to Reykjavík to search for these beautiful lights.

After a long day of sightseeing and adventure, you will be dropped off in Reykjavík shortly after midnight.

Good to know:

As your safety is our number one concern we will make every effort to find the best suited and safest ice caves at each time but as the conditions around and in the glacier are constantly changing and being shaped by the elements it's not possible to guarantee entrance to the ice caves. If such unfortunate situations arise we will make every effort to make other stops, such as a glacier hike, to make your experience more enjoyable. If we are unable to visit the ice cave, there will be a partial refund.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore cannot be guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed to maximise your chances to see them if weather allows

You can expect the tour to take 14-16 hours, so we recommend bringing snacks for the ride, but you can also purchase something along the way as the driver will be making short stops during the tour at service stations.

Make sure you’re dressed well as it‘s going to be a long and cold day, we recommend hiking boots and multi-layers of clothing. You can expect to be back in Reykjavík city shortly after midnight.
