Join this walking tour and discover the beauty of Iceland’s nature in the care of a experienced local guide. This is the perfect excursion for those looking to explore the countryside and get off the beaten path while following someone who knows the area intimately.

Meeting at the tourist information centre in Vík and driving a short way to the starting point of the hike, you will walk an hour to the day’s first stop, the ancient burial mound at Hjörleifshöfði. This area is directly linked to the history of the first settlers in Iceland and your guide will tell you stories of brotherhood, slavery and revenge.

Marvel at the magnificent landscapes and views out to the Atlantic ocean and black sand beaches of the south. You will also see the glacier that covers the volcano Katla and hear how this infamous volcano got its name and how it has reshaped the land and affected the livelihood of the inhabitants during various eruptions.

At the top of the mountain, you will take a coffee break and discuss when and why the Norse moved to this island in the west, that is now called Iceland. It’s sometimes all too easy to miss the lesser known attractions, but on this tour, your guide will introduce you to some hidden gems in the area and show you another side of Iceland.

Through this walk and talk, you can expect to learn a bit more about the nature as well as the life and history of the local people, who live under one of the most powerful volcanoes in Iceland.

Expect an exciting, intimate and in-depth walking tour that goes deeper into the history of the surroundings.  Avoid the crowded places and tourist traps and connect more directly with nature, history and the local culture.

Tours are conducted mainly in English but your guide is also fluent in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and can communicate reasonably well in Spanish and somewhat in German.
