Snowmobile Tour on Mýrdalsjökull Glacier
Jump into this exciting snowmobile tour all the way to the top of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Under this indomitable dome is the volcano Katla, ferocious in its fury. Before the Ring Road was completed in 1974, crossing the plains in front of the volcano was still cause for anxiety for the Icelandic people, due to frequent floods and deep rivers which cleave the landscape.
Along the way, you will stop at the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, crowning glory of the river Seljalandsá. Feel the spray on your face and breathe in the pure air as the waterfall crashes down into the basin below. Don't forget to take the rocky path behind the waterfall to experience it from a different perspective! Look out through the water over the rolling countryside and hear the calling of the gulls winging past the cliffs.
You will also stop at the majestic and much-photographed Skógafoss waterfall. One of the widest waterfalls in Iceland, so much spray is created by its mighty waters that a rainbow is often visible on sunny days - you may even spot a double rainbow for double the good luck! According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall. The legend says that locals found the chest years later, but were only able to grasp the ring on the side of the chest before it disappeared again. Can you spot the treasure chest?
Finally, you will visit Skógar Folk Museum to appreciate the hardships of life in Iceland in past centuries. The museum sports a meticulously curated collection of approximately 15,000 artifacts exhibited in 6 buildings which have been fully restored for guests curious about Icelandic history and lore.
