8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

Witness the marvels of Iceland in winter without worrying about planning or driving yourself. This immersive eight-day package incorporates a six-day tour, in which you will be guided in a comfortable minibus to incredible locations such as the Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, the Eastfjords and Lake Mývatn.

This package should appeal to anyone who is eager to see the beautiful sites and landscapes of Iceland, as well as those who seek to include some adventure into their holiday. In addition to sightseeing across the South, East and North of this amazing country, you have the chance to book glacier hiking and ice caving excursions to truly make the most of the opportunities that come with winter.

Of course, as this tour is conducted between November and March, you will also have plenty of chances to see the Northern Lights. You will be travelling in the dark hours to reach your destinations and often staying in rural hotels, giving you better odds of capturing the phenomenon than those who are just staying in the capital.

Your accommodation in Iceland will all be sorted for you prior to arrival, as well as transfer to and from Keflavík International Airport. Also included in the price is a guided six-day tour, a flight from the northern town of Akureyri to Reykjavík, and admission to the Blue Lagoon.

Do not miss this chance to see Iceland’s greatest sites in the winter. Check availability by choosing a date.

If you arrive late, you can postpone this to your last day.

Once you reach Reykjavík, you can settle into your accommodations and explore the museums, shops, bars and restaurants of Iceland’s vibrant capital.

Preferred accommodation in Reykjavík

Reykjavík Quality

Day 2 - Golden Circle

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

On day two, you will start your six-day guided tour. You will be picked up from your Reykjavík accommodation early, and be whisked away to the most popular tourist trail in Iceland, the Golden Circle.

Three incredible sites make this route so popular. The first of these is Þingvellir National Park, one of three National Parks in Iceland and the only one also on the UNESCO World Heritage List as it is here where Iceland's parliament, Alþingi, was founded in the year 930 AD.

This beautiful place is located directly in the Mid Atlantic rift, sheltered by two tectonic plates, and the effects on the landscape as they pull apart have led to dramatic gorges and geological marvels.

After enjoying the sites here, you will continue to the next location, the Geysir Geothermal Area. This site is home to an active geyser, Strokkur, which erupts very regularly to heights that can exceed twenty metres; it is also surrounded by hot springs and fumaroles, giving you your first taste of the active forces just beneath the surface of the ground in Iceland.

Finally, you will reach Gullfoss waterfall, one of the most classic sites of Iceland. This feature cascades in two steps down into a dramatic, ancient canyon, and in winter, is framed by ice glistening on the rocks. After marvelling at its power and beauty, you will head to the village of Hella where you will spend the night. Remember to keep an eye out for the Northern Lights before you retire.

Day 3 - The South Coast

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

On your third day, you will start to cross the beautiful South Coast of Iceland, an area renowned for its diverse scenery, and the wealth of landmarks that can be found right off the main road.

First up, you will see two waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Both tumble from cliffs near the coast from heights of over sixty metres, but are vastly different in all other ways. Seljalandsfoss is very unusual, as the cliff behind it is hollowed; if the ground is not too wet or icy, it is possible to fully encircle the falling water. Skógafoss, meanwhile, is very powerful and dramatic, measuring up to twenty metres wide.

Following your time at these features, you will continue onto Sólheimajökull glacier. In winter, it becomes encased in vivid blue ice, making it as beautiful as it is spectacular. If you elected to do so while booking, you can take a hike onto its otherworldly surface, and marvel over the crevasses, ridges, formations and incredible views.

Before reaching the town of Vík, where you will spend the night, you will make a couple of more stops. First is the massive Dyrhólaey rock arch where you'll get a great panoramic view of black sand beaches, the coastline and the mighty Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

You will then finish the sites of the day on the black-sand Reynisfjara beach, admiring the unusual sea-stacks of Reynisdrangar, and keeping a safe distance from the notorious sneaker waves.

Day 4 - Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

On day four, you will finish crossing the South Coast, and hit two of Iceland’s most beautiful, renowned locations as you do. While every day of this tour promises to be incredibly rewarding, it is very possible that this will be the most enjoyable one.

The first site is Skaftafell Nature Reserve. This area is considered so valuable to Icelanders that it was a National Park in its own right until the park was vastly expanded to include the whole Vatnajökull area.

It is renowned for its glaciers, glacier lagoons, forests, lava fields, rivers and its waterfalls; conditions allowing, you will hike to one of these falls, Svartifoss, which is surrounded by black basalt columns and unlike any other in Iceland.

After spending some time in this hiker’s paradise, you will return to your minibus and continue to your next incredible destination, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. For many travellers to Iceland, this is the country’s crowning jewel; you will witness an enormous lake filled with gigantic icebergs, which are cruising from a glacier to the ocean. The area is also home to many seals, making it even more popular amongst lovers of wildlife.

You will also visit the coastline nearby, often called ‘the Diamond Beach’. On this stretch, the icebergs wash on the shore and provide a beautiful contrast against the foaming surf and black sands.

As if these destinations are not appealing enough, you can top off today with an exploration of an ice cave under Vatnajökull glacier. Caves like these are only formed in very few places, under very certain conditions, so this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

You will spend the night in the south-east of the country.

Day 5 - The Eastfjords

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

On day five, you will leave the South Coast and start to explore the remote and dramatic Eastfjords. Few get the chance to reach this part of the country, especially in winter, so you can expect the spectacular destinations to be rather clear of the crowds.

You will regularly stop as you travel, to marvel over and photograph the incredible fjords, giant mountains, beautiful seascapes and quaint little villages. You will also keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife around this area, as it has a lot of diversity. Along the coast, you may see seals,  and inland, you have a chance to spot Arctic Foxes and wild reindeer.

Your destination for the night is in the largest town in the East, Egilsstaðir, where your accommodation is waiting.

Day 6 - Lake Myvatn and Husavik

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

On day six, you will head to the northern region of Lake Mývatn. This area is incredibly geothermally and geologically active, providing a great diversity of sites for you to enjoy.

The trip from Egilsstaðir to Mývatn is not without its highlights, however. Most notably en route, is Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. Consisting of murky water from Vatnajökull glacier, it is over 100 metres wide, 45 metres tall and plunges into a canyon called Jökulsárgljúfur.

Once at Mývatn, there is a wealth to see. You will head to Dimmuborgir, for example, often nicknamed ‘the Dark Fortress’ due to the scale, colour and formation of the lava rock here. You will also see the geothermal area of Námaskarð pass, with its dramatic hot springs and fumaroles. The Lake Mývatn itself is also beautiful, and unique due to the unusual basalt formations that rise from the water.

If you elect to, you can spend the late afternoon unwinding at the beautiful Mývatn Nature Baths. Following this, you will head to the town of Húsavík, which is one of Iceland’s oldest settlements. The buildings here are picturesque and historic, Skjálfandi Bay is beautiful, and there are plenty of shops and boutiques to investigate.

You will spend the night back at Lake Mývatn.

Day 7 - Akureyri to Reykjavik

8-Day Winter Package | South Coast, Eastfjords & Lake Myvatn

Sadly, day seven is the last day on the road, but thankfully, the tour is not over yet. You will be driven to the town of Akureyri, first thing in the morning, where you will have the chance to do some exploring. This is an incredibly charming settlement, with boutiques, museums, historical buildings and the world’s northernmost botanical gardens.

Once you have enjoyed the sites, you will head to Akureyri airport in time for your domestic flight back to the city of Reykjavík. You can thus arrive back in the quirky capital in full knowledge that you have explored as many sites of Iceland as possible over the past week.
