2 Day South Coast Tour | Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon, Black Beach & Waterfalls

Join this two-day tour of the stunning South Coast of Iceland to discover the likes of glaciers, lava fields, volcanoes, rivers and cascading waterfalls, as well as the unique and naturally formed Blue Ice Cave. This excursion is for anyone looking to experience the vast wonders of Iceland in only two days.

Your adventure begins with a pickup from Reykjavík City on the morning of your first day, after which you will pay a visit to two of the country’s most famous and remarkable waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Then, you will be treated to their nearby waterfalls of equal allure; Gljúfrabúi, Kvernufoss and Írafoss, which are hidden gems of the area that many people miss out on experiencing.

The black pebble beach Reynisfjara and its stunning sea stacks Reynisdrangar will complete this exciting first day of the tour.

After a good night’s rest, your adventure continues, where you will visit the otherworldly nature reserve Skaftafell and take a walk along the Diamond Beach. The beach consists of black velvet sand that’s dotted with glistening icebergs, that are making their way from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean.

The glacier lagoon counts as one of Iceland’s primary attractions, where you can gaze at the huge chunks of ice floating in the azure waters—you might even spot the resident seals that are often curious enough to greet visitors.

Then it’s time for the highlight of the tour; to visit a natural ice cave within Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland’s largest ice cap. To visit one of these caves is a rarity and a privilege, as they are hunted down by experts each fall and fill with meltwater each spring. Since this is the winter season, there is a good chance the Northern Lights might grace you with their presence each night of your adventure.

If you want to experience the nature of Iceland to its full extent and witness a true natural phenomenon, then book this tour now; it is in high demand and of limited availability. Check availability by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - South Coast, Five Waterfalls & Black Beach Reynisfjara

2 Day South Coast Tour | Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon, Black Beach & Waterfalls

After getting picked up in Reykjavík, you will pass through the small towns and beautiful countryside of Route 1. Your first stop will be the one and only waterfall Seljalandsfoss, located in the shadow of the infamous volcanic ice cap Eyjafjallajökull. Remember to ask your guide all about the colossal 2010 eruption that halted all airline travel across Europe.

After having visited the close by, but lesser known, waterfall Gljúfrabúi, you will head onto the cascading wonder Skógafoss, a 60-metre drop of raw, cascading power. Up next are two hidden gems of the area, the stunning waterfalls Kvernufoss and Írafoss.

Then it is time to head to the black beach Reynisfjara by the coastal village Vík. The beach nestles under the sea cliff Mt. Reynisfjall, where black basalt columns have been shaped by nature into various rock formations, most notably the eerie Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Be careful on this beach and never turn your back to the sea, since powerful sneak waves can carry you out in an instant if you don't heed the warning signs.

At the end of your day, you will retreat to a local accommodation in the area, but not before embarking on a hunt for the Northern Lights that often grace the night sky with their presence during the winter months. The lights can never be guaranteed, but their predictability is meticulously calculated, and your guides will do their very best to find them for you.

Day 2 - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon & The Blue Ice Cave

2 Day South Coast Tour | Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon, Black Beach & Waterfalls

On your second day, get ready for a unique experience as the highlight of the tour awaits. After a drive through Vík, you will get off the bus in Skaftafell, a vast nature reserve of amazing landscapes and countless attractions.

You will then make your way to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a world-renowned sight of icebergs floating lazily in freezing water, creating a serene and otherworldly sight. The ice has broken off from one of Vatnajökull’s many outlet glaciers, Breiðamerkurjökull. Some of the bergs wash up on shore, where they glisten in the sun like gemstones, on the sand strip dubbed the Diamond Beach.

From this location, your ice cave adventure will begin. A specialised super jeep will take you the rest of the way from the lagoon, through the highlands, to the entrance of the cave. Remember that this winter phenomenon forms each year naturally, when the temperature drops, after which glacial experts hunt for the best caves that are safe to explore. You will have a good hour to explore this winter wonderland of glistening shades of blue ice, so remember to bring your camera for the once in a lifetime photo opportunities.

After this unforgettable adventure, you will ride the jeep back to Jökulsárlón, where you will jump back on the bus and head to Reykjavík City. After a quick stop at Vík for refreshments, the Northern Lights just might show.

On your way back, you can be rest assured that you just enjoyed some of the most unique and incredible attractions Iceland has to offer.
